About
Shakti, the iconic Indian jazz fusion band, made a significant return with a mesmerizing Tiny Desk concert. The band, initially formed in 1973 by renowned jazz guitarist John McLaughlin alongside traditional Indian virtuosos, paved the way for a fusion of Western and Indian musical styles. The recent performance featured classics like "Shrini's Dream," showcasing the incredible talents of tabla player Zakir Hussain, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan, and vocalist Shankar Mahadevan.
Shakti's unique blend of Indian music with jazz elements represents a fusion not only of musical styles but also of the Hindustani and Carnatic music traditions. The band's name, meaning "creative intelligence, beauty, and power," embodies their innovative approach to music. Following a hiatus, Shakti regrouped in 2020, releasing their first album in 46 years, "This Moment," and embarking on a world tour named Shakti50, spanning across India, Europe, and the United States.
With a history that includes groundbreaking performances and collaborations, such as their appearances at the Montreux Jazz Festival and the formation of Remember Shakti in 1997, Shakti continues to push boundaries and inspire audiences with their unparalleled artistry and cultural fusion.
