About

German composer and pianist Volker Bertelmann, better known as Hauschka, recently returned to NPR for a Tiny Desk concert in which he showcased his unique approach to the piano. Unlike his previous performance in 2010 where he used unconventional items like Ping-Pong balls, this time he experimented with the upright piano by inserting tin foil, pink putty, cellophane, and more into the strings, along with an array of toys from his bag. The largely improvised set featured Bertelmann's signature prepared piano compositions, showcasing his eclectic musical style. Hauschka, born in 1966, has garnered acclaim for his work, including winning awards for his compositions in films like "All Quiet on the Western Front" (2022). This Tiny Desk concert exemplified his innovative and boundary-pushing approach to music.
