About
Julien Baker, an American indie rock singer and guitarist known for her moody and confessional lyrical style, captured hearts with her poignant Tiny Desk concert in March 2016, following the release of her debut album, "Sprained Ankle." The performance, now nearing two million views on YouTube, was met with acclaim and became one of the most talked-about Tiny Desk Concerts of that year.
Returning in the summer of 2017 to showcase her new release, Baker's second Tiny Desk Concert was a standout. Born and raised in suburban Memphis, Tennessee, Baker's music delves into themes such as Christianity, addiction, mental illness, and human nature. Her career includes Grammy Award nominations and wins as part of the indie supergroup Boygenius, alongside Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus.
Baker signed to Matador Records after the success of her debut album and later released her second studio album, "Turn Out the Lights," followed by the more full-band sound of "Little Oblivions" in 2021, which marked her first top 40 album on the Billboard 200 chart. Recently, Boygenius announced their reunion and released their debut studio album "The Record" in March 2023, with their latest release, "The Rest," following in October 2023. Baker continues to captivate audiences with her introspective and emotionally charged musical style.
