Cuban jazz pianist Alfredo Rodríguez recently wowed the audience at a Tiny Desk concert with his impressive piano skills, showcasing the unique combination of European lyricism and Afro-Cuban percussion that defines the Cuban piano tradition. Accompanied by drummer Michael Olivera and guitarist/bassist Munir Hossn, Rodríguez delivered a captivating performance with rapid-fire syncopation and melodic rhythms.
Born on October 7, 1985, Rodríguez comes from a musical family background, with his father being a professional singer and composer. He honed his skills studying classical piano at various prestigious conservatories in Havana and was inspired to pursue jazz after participating in the "JoJazz" competition, where he won an honorable mention in 2003. In 2006, he performed at the Montreaux Jazz Festival and caught the attention of music legend Quincy Jones, who has since become his producer and mentor.
Rodríguez is known for his collaboration on the anthem "Better City, Better Life," which was selected as the official soundtrack of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. His talent was recognized with a Grammy nomination in 2015 for "Best Instrumental Arrangement" for the song "Guantanamera." Through his remarkable compositions and dynamic performances, Rodríguez continues to impress audiences worldwide with his exceptional musical abilities.
