About

Black Uhuru, the iconic reggae band with a name meaning "Black Freedom," recently graced the Tiny Desk concert series with their powerful message of solidarity. The band, which has been going strong for over 40 years, opened their set with "Here Comes Black Uhuru," setting the tone for their legacy to shine anew.

Known for their late-'70s and early-'80s classics, Black Uhuru has seen various lineup changes throughout the years. The current incarnation features frontman and co-lead Andrew Bees, who has been with the group since around 1997. Their album "As The World Turns," released in 2018 after a delay, garnered a Grammy nomination for best reggae album. The setlist also included the title track from this album, as well as "I See You," a love song led by co-founder Derrick "Duckie" Simpson.

Formed in Jamaica in 1972 as Uhuru, the group transitioned into Black Uhuru and achieved success in the 1980s, winning the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album with "Anthem" in 1985. With Simpson as the mainstay member since the early '70s, Black Uhuru continues to captivate audiences with their mesmerizing reggae sound, reminding us of the enduring power of their music in today's tumultuous world.
