About

Superchunk, the American indie rock band from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, showcased their enduring passion for punk-fueled story songs at a notable Tiny Desk concert in 2013. With a career spanning four decades since their formation in 1989, the band's lineup features Mac McCaughan on guitar and vocals, Jim Wilbur on guitar, Laura Ballance on bass, and Jon Wurster on drums. Ballance's absence at the Tiny Desk due to her worsening hearing problem was filled by Jason Narducy.

During the intimate NPR Music performance, Superchunk treated the audience to songs from their albums "I Hate Music" and "Majesty Shredding," as well as a throwback to 1995 with a track from "Here's Where the Strings Come In." Known for their energetic, high-velocity style influenced by punk rock bands like Hüsker Dü and Buzzcocks, the band's music resonates with a DIY ethic. Members McCaughan and Ballance also co-founded the successful independent record label Merge Records in 1989, through which they released music from Superchunk and other artists.

Over the years, Superchunk has released a string of albums, including their most recent ones like "What a Time to Be Alive" in 2018 and "Wild Loneliness" in 2022. Their ability to translate their electric sound to acoustic instruments at the Tiny Desk concert provided a special and joyous experience for fans, showcasing their musical evolution and commitment to their craft over the years.
